Friends School Field Trip to Fort Snelling State Park
It was delightful to share a day at Fort Snelling State Park with the 5th and 6th graders of the Friends School of Minnesota on Novermber 8th. Students and their teachers explored the day's weather and phenology, discussed climate change and solutions to it, and performed a service project for the park removing invasive buckthorn. The trip was part of the Parks Climate Challenge and compliments the climate and weather sciences taught during their year at school. Here are some of the things we found together ...
Phenology Observations:
- White-tailed deer! Male ("buck") deer were seen with large racks of antlers and grazing on buds and twigs.
- We found a yearling garter snake that was about to shed its skin - when do they start hibernating?
- The few remaining green leaves were mostly buckthorn - of which there are fewer now thanks to the folks at the Friends School!
Weather Observations:
- Temperature: 55-60 degrees (f) - which is nearly 10 degrees warmed than the historic normal high temperature of 49 degrees (MN Weatherguide Calendar)
- Barometric Pressure: 29.2 - 29.5 in/Hg
- Wind Speed: 2-8 mph
- Cloud cover: 80% cumulous in the morning. Changed to 5-30% by the afternoon and cirrus.
- River temperature was approximately 44 degrees (f)

The sun went down really quickly and every single daytime animal is asleep. The stars are hidden by the clouds. The blue jays and robins were all out today. Now is the time of year when most animals are asleep, but since its warmer outside, they stay out a bit longer.

ITS RAINING!! We finally have some precipitation! Now if only we could get up toe the average! Some worms that can survive the cold are outside and the birds are snacking on them. I actually saw a robin swoop down and take the worm that I was standing right next to! It was so neat! I also saw some hawks and eagles this morning! This is one Terrific Tuesday!!

Weather: Cloudy, about 45 degrees, and windy from the east
I've noticed that now almost all the leaves have fallen and the temperature is dropping. There has been a steady weather pattern of rainy wet weather for the past week about. The rain we have gotten has been used up by the very dry ground and semi drought conditions. Many of the tamarack trees are yellow and the needles are falling. The late goose migration seems to be going on pretty heavily as well. There has been occasional frost but with the rainy weather it has subsided for a time.
Temperate Tuesday

Very temperate today; not too hot and not too cold. Just in the mid 70's I my kind of weather. We also did get some rain that was badly needed. There was low humidity for the morning and high humidity later in the afternoon. Minnesota is a greast state for it's up and down weather, whuch is why we are having HIGH and LOW ranges of temperatures. Our climate never stays the same for long!
