Last Observations of the Year

Great River School PhotoAuthor: Nickolas, Great River School

Location: Lauderdale

Weather: Cloudy, windy, cool. a very nice day overall

So this is my last time making one of these backyard observations in this location. When I look around where I live, I see many houses, many roads, and lots of trees in between. I live close to some golf courses so there is a lot nature around where i live because there are trees around the golf courses. Where I will be moving there will be even more, not as close but a lot more. I can look out my window and see trees. Not everybody is able to do that when they live in apartments. Tonight is kind of windy and cloudy but there is no rain, it is very nice. Im going to miss this place. Life goes on and the summer will make this place very nice.

Last Observation of the School Year

Author: Joseph, Great River School

Location: Saint Paul, Minnesota

Weather: 65 degrees Fahrenheit

It is very nice out tonight. Slightly chilly and slightly damp. It feels like it is going to rain out tonight and although it was supposed to it hasn't yet. This is my last reflection of the semester. I haven't done one in a while because of ultimate tournaments. Everything is very luscious and green outside. The air smells awesome right now, a mix of fresh plants, cut grass and rain. The flowers planted along our fence pop out because of how pink they are. The sky is a very very light purple although dim because it is nighttime right now. All I hear is my neighbors water hissing away and bugs plying into leaves of the vine on my fence. As I sit hear and write it starts to rain. A small raindrop falls onto my iPad screen. All I hear is my parents in the back yard with their friends around a fire an an airplane overhead. It is a great night to end the school year.

Summer!

Great River School PhotoGreat River School PhotoGreat River School PhotoAuthor: Lilli, Great River School

Location: St.Paul

Weather: Cloudy. 70 degrees F. winds 5 mph.

It was pretty nice out today, cool winds in the morning but pretty nice, although mostly cloudy. It rained the past few days and so everything is very green and lush. All the trees now have leaves on them, and there are bunnies running around everywhere. There has been a lot of work on the street in front of my house for the sewer and gas lines and so the side walk and grass is torn up in a lot of places. Where there is grass though it is very green and nice to lay on. It has been very noisy around lately not only because of the machines digging and things but also the lawn mowers and dogs barking. But over all it has been very nice out, and today was a calm day with not much weather issues going on unlike yesterday when it was raining buckets!
The maple tree that I have been writing about for the past while has gotten a lot more leaves, and looks more filled out although it is still very small, it has grown a little bit in the last year. Also the hastas that I took a picture of a few weeks ago have grown to their almost full size already, it's impressive how fast plants grow even when there under a tree like that.

Im looking outside and everywhere i look it is a sharp luscious green. It has been raining for the past 2 days on and off and now all of the plants look very good and healthy. The birds are chirping, there are squirrels running around, it smells wonderful and nature is just all in balance right now. Saint Paul is ready for the summer, and so am I.

The Rainy Day

Author: Nickolas, Great River School

Location: Lauderdale MN

Weather: Very rainy. Warm, humid. Very stuffy.

I'm sitting out on my patio/deck and it is raining really hard. The rain is hitting the ground and cars and buildings everything. The sound of rain is sooo wonderful. This is e sound that would be great to fall asleep to. Not only does it sound good but it's the only thing you can hear. It's not too loud but it's loud enough to cover all other sounds. Also another wonderful thing that happened during rain storms is the smell. It smells so fresh and green, and nice. This is some of the best weather. There is a little of lighting and thunder but not enough to be disturbing just enough to enjoy it. It is a wonderful night.

Windy Day

Author: Evan, Great River School

Location: Backyard of my house

Weather: today it is 85 F. The wind is blowing at 8 MPH with gusts up to 10 MPH its cloudy and the humidity is at 27%

It's sort of a cloudy day and it looks like it could start to rain at any minute. The flower gardens are very green an plants have been planted in the window boxes. The grass is very green and lots of birds are chirping everywhere. I can hear the wind shake the leaves on the trees and cars going down streets in the distance. It is a very lovely day.

Weather: Very sunny. Blue skies. No rain, it's very dry. About 70-80 degrees. Very nice.

I'm sitting out side and it is very loud. There is wind gusting and tree leaves and branching swaying. There is a lot of traffic. Lots of honking and sounds from cars and motorcycle engines. The birds are making a lot of noise. And yet it is a very nice day out. It is very sunny and blue skies I guess at this time of day everybody is rushing to get home, or work, or somewhere (I'm about to go to ultimate practice). It is just a nice tuesday afternoon and everybody wants to make the best of it. Although there is a lot of chaos there is also flow. My apartment building parking lot is not that big but sometimes it's busy. For every car that leaves another comes. The streets are busy but not stopped or chaotic. The birds are still chirping in melody and good tones. Sometimes the world( or at least the area I'm in) is busy and sometimes it's quiet and peaceful. There is a good balance.

There Is Life Among Us

Author: Nickolas, Great River School

Location: MN

Weather: Sunny, blue skies, some white cotton clouds, slight winds, warm outside but when the wind hits your skin you get a little chilly. Probably 60-70 degrees.

I'm sitting outside of my apartment building. In the back there is a little enclosed off area kind of hidden in the woods, it is between housing and the golf coarse. It is really nice. I'm just sitting in the sun listening to all of the birds chirping and playing around. I can hear lots of scrapes on the bark of tres as squirrels run up and down trees. The sun is heating up my back and my head while the wind cools off my body. It is very peaceful. When I look around I see wonderful bright green trees that look like they are overexcited that it's springtime. There are still buds on the trees but most of them have turned into rich green leaves. On some of the trees there is even lots of bright pink flowers. I could sit here for days just listening to the leaves swaying in the wind, hearing the birds chirp and hearing the animals play. It is a very nice day.

Damp May Night

Author: Joseph, Great River School

Location: Saint Paul, MN

Weather: 57 degrees Fahrenheit, damp

It is nice out tonight. It is damp yet not very cold. All I am wearing is shorts and a T-shirt and I feel just a little chilled. I can hear wet things dripping around me and birds chirping as well. Everything is getting so luscious and green. I can smell wet dirt. I also hear the water meter on the side of my neighbors house hissing away like it always does. The sky is a light purple like always, brighter on one horizon than the other. I hope this nice weather continues, although maybe not so much rain.

Clovers and Dandelions

Author: Melanie, Great River School

Location: Wooded area near Como Lake

Weather: Mostly sunny, quite warm out. A very faint breeze. It poured earlier today

I haven't been here for two weeks now, and I can definitely tell. The grass is no longer a field of lush greenery. It is now dotted its purple clover and yellow dandelions, some of which are seeding. The lilac tree that was in full bloom is now withering away already, the flowers wilting and turning an odd brownish colour. The crabapple tree across the street, which had fragrant blossoms only weeks ago, is now devoid of all colours but green. The oak trees, which two weeks ago still had small, developing leaves, now provide full shade from the sun, although the leaves do still have a bright, young look to them. Butterflies are darting around. There are small yellow ones, and a few that look like tiger moths but might not be. A squirrel protects its territory from another with a loud chattering sound. The birdsong is constant. It's strange, because now that the weather seems to be transitioning to summery, the grasses and animals are only just fully transitioning to spring. This year has had such wacky weather, I can only wonder what the summer will be like!
