Wild Rice is looking good!
Author: Tyler, Bemidji State University
Location: Mississippi River not too far from Lake Bemidji but before the dam
Weather: Partly cloudy, a little windy.
I went out with my boss as he has been harvesting wild rice for many years and knows way more about it than I do. This was my first time actually. It was really fun surprisingly. He showed me how to use the knockers and I thought it was crazy how much rice we were losing out of the canoe but he said that was normal. He lives just past the bridge over by Power Dam road on Sherman Dr. and has wild rice growing in the river right by his house. We managed to rack up about 80 pounds and he said once after the raw rice is done it is somewhere between 50-65% so he figured just from that day we would get about 45 pounds. It was a great experienced and we hope to go one more time before it becomes too late. I can easily see how you said you either hate or love it by the way haha...very understandable how some people would not like it.
