Harmony ALC visits Fort Snelling State Park, May 5th

Harmony ALC high school students braved a field trip to Fort Snelling State Park on May 5th,amidst threat of rain and snow to observe and inquire about the impacts of climate change on the Mississippi River. The event was another part of the Parks Climate Challenge, a partnership between Fort Snelling State Park, the Mississippi River Fund, the Mississippi National River and Recreation Are and the Will Steger Foundation
Thanks, Harmony ALC for a great field trip! Here are some of the highlights:
Weather observations:
- Air temperature ranged from: 34-38 degrees (f)
- 3" of measured precipitation (some snow!)
- Barometric pressure: 29.7 in/Hg
- Wind speed: 2-7mph
- Clouds: 100% coverage of cirrostratus clouds
Phenology observations:
- Buds visible, but not open
- Some migratory birds passing through, including geese
- Now flowers present (yet!)

Observation: Signs of life returning to the land from the extended winter as the grass and trees becoming green. Robins are now showing as I've seen lot more lately in my backyard. The birds calling also seem to be more frequently as a sign of spring.

Observation: Many squirrels outside enjoying the beautiful weather but chances of It raining are at 54% and that's not much for the climate to change from warm to cool and from subtle from noticing.

Observation: The sky today is blue as usual, but the color is faded. The trees have sprouted buds, and the buds are beginning to blossom. It has now officially been spring; and winter is finally over. The grass is green, but small patches are still covered over with yellow.

Observation: Grasses are starting to grow back. Trees buds are starting to open and some already grew light greenish leaves. It's sunny and a bit windy. The sky is blue and there are some clouds - not too thick or too clear.

Observation: It so sunny I had to wear my glasses out side. It feel warm and nice out side but hot inside my school where we all are to the point of wearing tank-tops, T-shirts, shorts, and dresses. There's green grass trying to grow out of the muddy grown. The trees have green leaves growning but some are still dormant.
